Importance of restrooms for employees well-being

"Well-being increases productivity", wrote the Cologne Institute for Economic Research back in 2014. The short article states that well-being increases work performance because satisfied employees make pragmatic decisions and are less likely to be ill (see Cologne Institute for Economic Research, 2014).

Driven by the coronavirus pandemic, the world of work has changed dramatically. This change is often referred to as the "new normal". Working from home, hybrid working models, more flexibility and self-determination are just some of the many terms used to describe it. However, nothing has changed in the view that the physical and mental health of employees is a key success factor for companies (see Oberdörffer & Nieswandt, 2023).

But which basic needs must be met first to create a good basis for employee health? A study conducted by Statista in collaboration with YouGov shows that clean toilets are one of them. On average, 70 percent of respondents said that a dirty toilet bothers them (see Statista Research Department, 2024)

However, dirty or poorly equipped restrooms are not just a "bothering factor", but can also become a real health risk. To avoid this, there are legal regulations that stipulate both the minimum equipment of toilet facilities and the frequency with which office toilets should be cleaned. These legal regulations vary slightly from country to country.
